The First Lady Her Excellency Professor Gertrude Mutharika has called for collaborated efforts in addressing challenges young people in the country are facing as regards access to sexual reproductive health services and rights.
Madame Mutharika said this on Tuesday in Lilongwe when she officially inaugurated new office building for the Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM).
The First Lady who is the Patron of FPAM, hailed the organization for the contribution the organization is making in the health sector.
Madame Mutharika said FPAM has over the past years continued to grow and broadening its operation areas to reach out to many Malawians especially the youth with Sexual and Reproductive Health information and services.
“I wish to encourage FPAM to continue working hand in hand with the Ministry of Health and Population as Government wishes to provide Universal Health Coverage to the people in Malawi and this can only be done by ensuring that everybody has access to proper and adequate health care,” said Madame Mutharika.
The First Lady gave assurances of her continued commitment and support towards FPAM operations in the country through the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM).
Madame Mutharika explained that BEAM Trust has embraced a holistic approach to addressing health challenges faced by young people by encouraging investiment in the education for all with emphasis on the girl child.
She said among other initiatives BEAM Trust is withdrawing girls from early marriages and taking them back to school.
“This is because we understand the sexual and reproductive health challenges and risks young girls face when they get entangled in early marriages. Above all, BEAM considers education as a catalyst to the meaningful promotion and protection of reproductive health rights and is a prerequisite to good sanitation and environmental protection in our communities” she said.
The First Lady commended the German government for making available funds to FPAM through KFW Development Bank for the construction of the FPAM house.
In his remarks the Executive Director of FPAM Thokozani Mbendera said the construction of the FLAM House will significantly improve delivery of services as well as allow expansion of these services to more people.
The ceremony was also graced by representatives from the KFW, International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and the Ministry of Health and Population.
FPAM begun its operations in Malawi in 1999 mainly providing comprehensive youth friendly sexual and reproductive health services to young people.
