She is 20 years old, the sixth in the family of nine children. Her father and mother are just subsistence farmers mostly struggling to fend for the big family. Struggling to pay school fees, Triza Jumbe was on and off of school until she was placed on the Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust education bursary.
Scoring 21 points at her MSCE Triza was selected to go to Lilongwe University for Natural Resources’s (LUANAR) Natural Resources (NRC) to study Horticulture. But that was just a far-fetched dream considering her family’s financial standing.
Today Triza is walking in the corridors of LUANAR’s NRC as a student pursuing a diploma in horticulture courtesy of Her Excellency Madam Gertrude Mutharika and the Beautify Malawi Trust.
“I am grateful to the First Lady Madam Gertrude Mutharika and BEAM for paying my school fees. This is a dream come true. I promise to work hard so that I achieve my goals,” Triza said.
Mr. Dingiswayo Jere an Executive Member of BEAM said:
“The first Lady is so passionate about girls attaining meaningful education but currently Beam is only limited to secondary education. It is our hope that more partners will come in to assist girls like Triza who after being supported, they are working hard and making it higher.”
Currently, BEAM is supporting over 1500 students on its education bursary some of who are teen mothers who are being brought back to school through the BEAM Bring Girls Back to School Initiative. Apart from the bursaries, BEAM Currently
Apart from the bursaries BEAM is also constructing girls hostels in some Community Day Secondary Schools to compliment government efforts to keep more girls in school.
